Weapon Sub-systems

With an underlying theme of devices and sub-systems containing energetic materials (explosives/propellants), Chemring Energetics UK Ltd (CEUK) has developed an extensive range of weapon related products.

Indeed, such is the range of experience of designing, developing and qualifying such equipments to defence prime contractors, CEUK can be considered a “one stop shop” for all such sub-systems.

Products include:

• devices – detonators, igniters (including a suite of 1A/1W 5 minute no-fire), primers, boosters
• rocket motors and gas generators
• launchers and stores release mechanisms – including a variety of Cartridge Release Units (CERUs)
• safety & arming devices for warheads and rocket motors – including shuttered/out-of line and in-line electronic systems
• lethal payloads – electronic interfaces, safety and arming, detonation trains and warheads
• weapon break-up systems – the CEUK products cover the spectrum from the cutting cord/explosive destruct mechanism through to the complete SAU and electronic interface package
• pyromechanisms – protractors (including the Metron range), retractors, cutters, explosive bolts, release/low shock bolts, separation nuts, detent actuators
• wing/fin erection mechanisms, fin-lock devices
• detonating/explosive transmission cords (including non-disruptive cord)

The design of equipment is frequently directed to ensure optimum Insensitive Munition properties within the overall weapon configuration. This involves the selection of the energetic material and packaging for transportation.

With propellant formulation capability, CEUK can design and manufacture propellants to meet, for example, specific thrust-time characteristics for gas generators and rocket motors.

Using the high explosive material supplied by Chemring Nobel, CEUK have the ability to fill warheads, manufacture boosters using, as appropriate, melt cast, cast cure and pressing facilities.

In addition, CEUK have demonstrated capability to develop and qualify training/drill rounds – a recent example is the Missile Simulated/Drill Round for the Javelin anti-armour weapon.
